Found Objects win ABSA's L'Atelier

This year's ABSA L'Atelier Award has gone to Elrie Joubert for her work Selective Unveiling, a series of found objects collected from her family's farm displayed on a light box.

 

Found Objects win ABSA's L'Atelier

The Gerard Sekoto award, for the most promising artist with an annual income less than R60 000, went to Bamabo Sibiya and his piece titled Mama uyimbokodo II.

 

The main prize entails R110 000 in cash and a six-month residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. Sibiya won a three-month residency at the Cité, French language classes and nationwide touring exhibitions. Five Merit Awards were awarded to Joubert, Sibya, Mandy Johnston, Nina Liebenberg, and Heidi Janice Mielke. The rest of the 10 finalists were awarded R2 500. They included Bamanye Nqxale, Karin Smith, Andrew Sprawson, Mbavhalelo Nekhavhambe and Mahlomola Nkosi.
